CHASS was established over 55 years ago in response to the closing of several community hospitals in Southwest Detroit and the subsequent flight of medical professionals to suburban practices. In 1970 Hispanic leaders negotiated the first-ever joint venture with local and state public health officials and CHASS began providing limited medical services to the uninsured and underinsured populations of Detroit.
