Our story

About CHASS. The Community Health and Social Services (CHASS) Center, Inc. is a community-based, not-for-profit organization formed to develop, promote and provide comprehensive, accessible and affordable quality primary health care and support services to all residents - with emphasis on the underserved African American and Latino populations.

Through maintaining effective community involvement and outreach, collaborating with community agencies to provide supportive social services, cooperating with other health care providers to insure continuity of care and particapating in research to increase our understanding of the health needs of the community, we are able and committed to providing comprehensive, high quality primary health and wellness care to our clients.

CHASS' Story.  The CHASS story is one of community determination, of a group of people saying that less is not enough and inequality is unacceptable.  CHASS was established more than 40 years ago in response to the closing of several community hospitals in  Southwest Detroit and the subsequent flight of medical professionals to suburban practices.  In 1970 Hispanic leaders negotiated the first-ever joint venture with local and state public health officials and CHASS began providing limited medical services to the uninsured and underinsured population of Detroit.  In 1993, as the need for expanded services grew, CHASS became a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) under the Health Resource Services Administrations's Bureau of Primary Health Care.

Today, CHASS is a nationally acclaimed model of quality health care to underserved urban populations.  We proudly have two sites throughout the city that provide comprehensive primary health, dental and wellness care to all, regardless of insurance status.  Our Southwest Center is our largest facility and is home to our adminstrative headquarters. Our Midtown Center is centrally located in Detroit's Midtown community.  Both sites meet the cultural and linguistic distinctions of the populations they serve.

CHASS is proud to have a unique partnership with the Henry Ford Health System (HFHS).  CHASS contracts for physician services with HFHS giving our providers access to HFHS' world renown Medical Group for referrals and consultations.  We know the need for health care does not get fixed in one doctor visit.  CHASS and HFHS work side-by-side to provide outpatient specialty care for its patients through a voucher program. CHASS is the only FQHC in the region to provide a seamless continuum of primary and secondary care to our clients.

CHASS Today .  CHASS has triumphed over the three main barriers to health care: language; convenient access; and transportation.

At CHASS we believe no patient should be denied proper medical assistance due to a language barrer.  For that reason, we provide all our services in English and Spanish to accomodate the majority of Detroit's population.  We believe no person should neglect seeing the doctor because they lack a way of getting to one of our centers.  CHASS provides door-to-door transporation services to our centers.

CHASS is not a free clinic.  We have a mix of partners who cover the cost of our services including private insurance agencies, Medicaid, Medicare and a sliding fee schedule that allows clients to pay for services based on household size and income.

CHASS is the community's answer to the void in accessible, affordable and culturally competent health care.
